SETAC Rome – An Exciting Program Is Waiting or You

The SETAC Europe 28th Annual Meeting is one month away! The program committee has worked very hard to put together a high-quality program for all attendees to enjoy. To help you prepare for your time in Rome, we are presenting an overview of what to expect when you get to the meeting.

Four Notable Keynote Speakers

A panel of four distinguished keynote speakers have been assembled and will address important issues at the SETAC Europe 28th Annual Meeting, which will be held from 13–17 May in Rome, Italy.

	Roger Strand, Professor at the Center for the Study of the Sciences and Humanities and the Center for Cancer Biomarkers at the University of Bergen, Norway, will speak on “Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI): A Path Towards Sustainability?” at the Opening Ceremony on Sunday, 13 May.
	Bernhard Url, Executive Director at the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), will address “Food Safety in a Complex Changing World” on Monday, 14 May.
	Eugenia Dogliotti, Director of the Department of Environment and Health at Istituto Superiore di Sanità (National Institute of Health, ISS), the leading technical-scientific body of the Italian National Health Service will present “Innovative Research Issues in Environmental Mutagenesis” on Tuesday, 15 May.
	Wrapping up the series of keynote speakers, Jason Snape, Senior Principal Environmental Scientist with AstraZeneca and Director of the Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Research and Foresight Programs will discuss “The Environmental Dimension of Antimicrobial Resistance: Assessing and Managing the Risks of Anti-infectives” on Wednesday, 16 May.

For the first time, SETAC Europe will organize a live stream of these four remarkable keynote speakers. The live streams will be available on SETAC social media pages.

What’s on at SETAC Rome?

Your vote is important to us to improve our Society. So please join the SETAC Europe Council and the SETAC Advisory Council assemblies. Share your thoughts and opinions, and cast your vote to support the direction you would like to see SETAC Europe move in the future.

If you wish, you can fill your agenda with plenty of activities! Have a look at the daily program and register to attend any or all of the events. These activities provide an opportunity to exchange ideas, meet peers from all over the world and enlarge your professional network while having fun. So look at your dailiy schedule and plan to include attendance at the events that interest you. We have something going on each day.

Sunday

Sign up for one of our full- and half-day training courses, or come to our mentorship program starting at 5:00 p.m. in Meeting Room 11 to connect with other mentors and mentees.

Monday

Continue your networking at the Student Mentor Lunch at 12:25 p.m. in the Workshop Room. Students can get in touch with established scientists from all over the world while enjoying a nice lunch together. Thanks to our sponsor Smithers Viscient, tickets are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis on Monday morning at the registration desk. Space is limited, so get your tickets early.

After lunch, join the SETAC-sponsored Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA). This online platform encourages discussion and facilitates outreach, while bridging the gap between practicing scientists and the general public. It is a great opportunity for anyone in the world curious about our science to ask their questions.

SETAC Europe is seeking volunteers to help answer those online questions. There is no experience required. Just come with a cup of coffee and enjoy this fun activity in a relaxed environment together with other bright researchers and peers.

The Reddit AMA will take place from 2:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m. at the SETAC Square. If you are interested in volunteering and sharing your expertise, please contact Delphine Delire.

Tuesday

On Tuesday, 15 May, we have another special lunch program for students and young scientists, sponsored by Colgate-Palmolive: the Student Lunch Seminar. The SETAC Europe Student Advisory Council (SAC) invited Agnieska Hunka from the Halmstad University, Sweden, to be the keynote speaker for this event. She will talk about the role of scientists, science journalism and scientific consensus in risk communication. The free tickets will be available on Tuesday morning at the registration desk.

You can join the SETAC Rome Fun Run from 12:00 p.m.–2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, 15 May. This non-competitive, five-kilometer race will take place in the Esposizione Universale Roma (EUR) area, which is near the congress center. Take time to rest your brain and exercise your body while you run through some of the beautiful areas in Rome. Register online today!

Give your brain another break and dance the night away at the Student Party, which will begin at 9:00 p.m. at Locanda Atlantide. Those SETAC Europe parties get sold out very fast, so register now! Purchase your ticket while registering online or go to the SETAC Europe store to add it into your existing registration. Tickets cost 20€ and include two drinks.

Wednesday

Join the SAC at 2:30 p.m. in the Workshop Room for the Students Assembly, and discover what is happening in the world of the SAC and students of SETAC. Join this great and dynamic SAC and get active to help make a difference for all students!

Come and vote at the SETAC Europe General Assembly. SETAC Europe is governed by a council of 20 members, elected by the general membership at the Annual General Assembly (AGA), which convenes every year during the SETAC Europe annual meeting. If you are a SETAC member from Europe, you are strongly encouraged to attend the assembly from 12:25 p.m.–1:55 p.m. on Wednesday, 16 May, in the Workshop Room. Lunch will be provided. Your vote is important to us, and we sincerely hope to meet you there.
