The SETAC Argentina Chapter, together with the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa (UADE), organized a successful one-day workshop on “The use of agrochemicals in Argentina, a multisector approach,” which was held on 25 August in Buenos Aires.

This event was designed by the current commission of SETAC Argentina, which is particularly interested in the potential interactions among academia, government and private sectors. In line with the SETAC mission of supporting the development of principles and practices for protection, enhancement and management of sustainable environmental quality and ecosystem integrity, this event was designed to create a friendly space for dialogue between the different decision-makers involved in the very complex topic of the use of agrochemicals in modern agriculture and its consequences in the environment.

Professionals from the Consorcio Regional de Experimentación Agrícola (CREA) and the Fundación Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (FARN NGO) were invited to speak about legislation. Specialists from the private sector, such as Organismo Argentino de Acreditación (OAA) and R&D Agroconsultora explained the process of registering agrochemicals. Delegates representing academia from the Universidad de Buenos Aires and Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata showed important data produced by the universities, remarking on the importance of generating ecotox data using native species. Discussion ensued on its potential application in the process of agrochemical registration. Finally, a representative from business, Dow Argentina, talked about the roles and responsibilities of each sector while a delegate of the Ministerio de Agroindustria emphasized the importance and need of fostering interactions with the other sectors.

The event brought together 65 professionals and students, who attended eight oral sessions. Throughout the day and following the round of presentations, the audience had the opportunity to interact with the speakers and ask questions about our system of control of agrochemicals in the environment. Workshop attendees identified actions to improve the use, assessment, control, monitoring and evaluation of contamination by agrochemicals. Now, it is in our hands to put into practice the knowledge gained at this workshop and work together across sectors to achieve better environmental management and use of these agrochemicals in Argentina.
