The Buddy System Is an Easy Way to Spread the SETAC Love

Corinna Singleman, SETAC North America Career Development Committee

Join the SETAC North America Career Development Committee’s expanding program to help new members get acquainted with all that SETAC has to offer!

The Buddy System is a free program that takes place every year during the SETAC North America annual meeting. We match experienced SETAC members (meeting guides) with first-time and international meeting attendees (buddies) to help them navigate the meeting, enhance their experience and encourage involvement with SETAC. Signing up is easy; you can do it online when you register for the meeting. The time commitment is small, and the knowledge you can pass to a new member is invaluable.

Who Should Be a Buddy?

If you are coming to SETAC for the first time or are coming to the North America meeting from another geographic unit, this is the program for you! We will pair you with a seasoned SETAC member, who can explain the ins and outs of the meeting and be a friendly face to look for throughout the week. Your meeting guide can also introduce you to other members and the networking culture of SETAC.

Who are Meeting Guides?

The program requires a minor commitment, as little as 30 minutes of your time. Have a drink with a SETAC first-timer at the Opening Reception to discuss how the meeting works, what options there are for networking, and any other advice you might have. If you have attended one SETAC meeting, you qualify to be a meeting guide at the SETAC North America 38th Annual Meeting in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

SETAC members interested in being a meeting guide or are first-time and international attendees can join the Buddy System online when registering for the annual meeting. Any SETAC members who are interested in participating in the Buddy System subcommittee to help organize or to contribute ideas, please contact Corinna Singleman.

Meeting guides and new members alike gave rave reviews about the Buddy System over the years. Here is what some had to say:

“My meeting guide was incredibly welcoming and informative at the beginning of the meeting and throughout. She introduced me to other attendees and checked in with me throughout to make sure I was getting on okay. I really appreciated her and the Buddy System program.”

“I love helping folks out, and this was the perfect opportunity to help young people, hopefully guiding them in the right direction and providing invaluable contacts.”

“The students are always so energized and enthusiastic, and I feel ‘rejuvenated’ afterwards.”
