SETAC Europe 27th Annual Meeting: Scientific and Social Programs are Coming Together

Ilse Schoeters, Karel De Schamphelaere and Gertie Arts, SETAC Brussels Committee Co-chairs

The SETAC Europe 27th Annual Meeting will take place from 7–11 May 2017 in Brussels, Belgium. There are less than three months to go! The SETAC Brussels office, scientific and local organizing committees have been working like busy bees during the last months to make this meeting a feast for not only your brains but all your senses. Here is a non-exhaustive snapshot of what the meeting will offer:

Scientific Program

The SETAC Brussels office has dotted their i's and crossed their t's on the scientific program. The daily schedule of the platform sessions can be found at

Short Courses

An interesting and diverse set of short courses will be offered on Sunday, 7 May, ranging from technical courses on mixture risk assessment and emerging fish diseases, to statistical courses on R or issues that will help you better design ecotox experiments, and to courses that will develop non-scientific skills such as presenting, writing and time management.

For the first time ever, there will be a specialized SETAC Certification of Environmental Risk Assessors (CRA) course offered on the “Evaluation of Ecotoxicity and Degradation Studies for Use in Environmental Risk Assessment of Chemicals.” This course is highly recommended for anyone who wants to work in the area of hazard and risk assessment of chemicals.

Student Activities

SETAC Europe Student Party
Claim your ticket for the student party before they are gone!

As almost 30% of the meeting participants are students, special efforts have been put in place for this important group within SETAC.

For those that are new to SETAC or are first-time meeting attendees, we offer a mentorship program. Volunteer mentors can help students find their way at the meeting, introduce them to interesting colleagues, tell them more about SETAC, or just chat about science over lunch. We highly recommend this program to everybody!

Building on the success of previous years, the Student Mentor Lunch will be held on Monday, 8 May. Students have access to established scientists from all over the world, can build up their network and get to know not only senior scientists but also other students. This event is sponsored by Smithers Viscient. Tickets are free and available at the registration desk on a first-come, first-served basis.

The popular Student Lunch Seminar will be held on Tuesday, 9 May. This is an interactive session during which students have the opportunity to discuss highly topical subjects with the keynote lecturer. Tickets to this event are free and available at the registration desk on a first-come, first-served basis.

This year, we are also launching a new Job Event. Prospective employees can meet company representatives in this job opportunity “speed dating” event.

Last but not least, the Student Party, a tradition at SETAC Europe annual meetings, will bring together SETAC’s youth for a night of fun. The party will be at one of Brussels’ famous nightclubs, right in the city center. Register quickly! Tickets for this event sell out fast.
