SETAC Nantes: Environmental Contaminants from Land to Sea: Continuities and Interfaces in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry

It is our great pleasure to invite you to the 26th SETAC Europe Annual Meeting, which will be held from 22–26 May in Nantes, France. The theme is “Environmental Contaminants from Land to Sea: Continuities and Interfaces in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry,” and experts from academia, government and business will share the most advanced knowledge in environmental sciences in order to improve chemical risk assessment and support current and future policies.

From the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean
After the memorable annual meeting in Barcelona, Spain, we invite you to discover one of the most famous cities of the French Atlantic coast. Nantes is at the interface between the Atlantic Ocean and the Loire Valley. Easily accessible by train (more than 20 two-way trips from Paris every day) and plane (more than 65 direct flights within Europe), the city is the best starting point to explore some of the finest castles in the Loire Valley and the famous vineyards along the Loire River. Birthplace of the famous novelist of adventure and science fiction Jules Verne, Nantes is also at the interface between its rich history and the possibilities for the future, preserving cultural traditions and developing competitive and innovative economic activities.

Scientific by Nature
With a solid tradition in the industrial, maritime and food processing sectors, Nantes is recognized for its excellence in innovative technologies, bringing together academic and industrial stakeholders. Digital technologies and robotics find applications in aircraft engineering, ship building and health care. Biotechnologies support the development of renewable marine energies and the use of marine bioresources in various sectors including food processing and health care. More than 50,000 students and 200 research laboratories benefit from reputable scientific organizations and facilities such as the University of Nantes, the Jules Verne Technological Research Institute and the Jules Verne Museum, the Institute of Advanced Studies in Human Sciences, and the Ifremer (French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea) Atlantic Center.

Scientific Program
The Scientific Organizing Committee benefits from the joint involvement of scientific evaluators and representatives of national organizations. The Scientific Organizing Committee has 23 members from academia (10), government and European authorities (7) and business (6), overall representing 13 European countries. The eight representatives of national organizations are from governmental agencies, such as the French Ministry of Ecology and Sustainable Development, public research institutes and a scientific foundation.

Over the last few months, the Scientific Organizing Committee evaluators have been actively involved in the reviewing process of nearly 120 proposals for parallel sessions and some 1,800 abstracts for platform and poster presentations. Such high numbers of proposals look promising for the scientific attractiveness and future success of the meeting. The scientific program is now complete, and we wish to thank all the session chairs and co-chairs who invested time and energy to provide the meeting attendees with a diversity of topics that cover the main fields of interest in environmental toxicology and chemistry.

The 70 parallel sessions are distributed among nine tracks, covering the environmental fate and transport of contaminants; the fate and effects of contaminants of emerging concern; aquatic and terrestrial ecotoxicology, including the development and application of biomarkers and bioassays in environmental toxicology and monitoring; mechanistic-based exposure and effect modeling; environmental “-omics” and evolutionary effects of chemicals; interactions between contaminants and natural stressors; life cycle aarssessment and sustainability; risk assessment and management; and education and communication in environmental sciences. These tracks are covering the various types of environmental elements (fresh and marine water, groundwater, soil, sediment, air, landscape, etc.), geographical areas (temperate, tropical, arctic, Mediterranean), pollutants (pesticides, biocides, POP, PBT, pharmaceuticals, nanomaterials, metals, natural toxins, plastics, oil, waste, etc.) whether they are studied in isolation or as mixtures, organisms (microorganisms, [macro]invertebrates, aquatic and terrestrial plants, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals, etc.), and methods (sampling, analyses, modeling, guidance documents and guidelines, standardization, etc.).

In addition, seven special sessions have been accepted. They will address topics of high scientific and societal concern, specific and context-related environmental issues, as well as transversal topics within the core business of SETAC.

Finally, we are proud to announce three keynote speakers:

  • Arja Rautio with the University of Oulu’s Thule Institute will show how climate change and environmental contamination by chemicals may combine to modulate ecological and health effects
  • Marc Léonard with L´Oréal will address the regulatory perspectives related to the fate and effects of cosmetics and personal care products
  • Thomas Maes with CEFAS will talk about plastic waste in aquatic environments

Important Deadlines

  • February: Registration opens
  • 22 March (11:59 p.m. CET): Early registration deadline for delegates, presenters and session chairs
  • 25 March: Science slam proposals submission deadline
  • 22 April: Early bird registration payment deadline. In order to remain eligible for the early bird registration fee, payment must be received by 22 April. Short course registration deadline.
  • 27 April: Deadline for advance registration
  • 22–26 May: On-site registration

The module for late-breaking science poster abstracts will open early February, and poster abstracts can be submitted until May.
