Outcomes of the SETAC Pellston Workshop on Simplifying Environmental Mixtures

Scope of the Workshop

The first SETAC Pellston workshop held in Europe took place from 22–27 March in Valencia, Spain, and addressed “Simplifying Environmental Mixtures—An Aquatic Exposure-based Approach Via Exposure Scenarios.” Approximately 40 scientists met for a week of intense discussions to develop a simplified approach for assessing the potential risks of chemical mixtures in freshwaters. A series of simplified exposure scenarios were derived to represent a range of discharges from key sources, including (i) domestic wastewater, (ii) impervious surface run-off, (iii) agricultural systems, and (iv) a combination of the scenario’s above.

Cross-disci­plinary teams developed local and catchment-level typologies that enable integration of these expo­sure scenarios in a risk assessment scheme that includes both prospective and retrospective frame­works. Application of the approach to representative chemical mixtures associated with the different exposure scenarios could be used to address a range of questions on the acceptability of chemical mixtures in the freshwater environment.
